The Hamburg airport was shut down for several hours on Sunday after numerous people were sickened by an “unknown toxin” that apparently came through the air conditioning system. Officials emphatically declared it was NOT a terror attack.
It began with people complaining of breathing problems and burning eyes. Flights were canceled for several hours. The schedule resumed at 2 p.m. local time.
Sky News reported that 68 people were treated for exposure to the chemical, and 9 of them were sent to the hospital. Fire officials stated it could have been caused by “pepper spray” after a canister of the substance was found.
RT reported,
“A pepper spray or a similar substance is most likely behind the incident, a spokesman for the firefighters said, noting that a refill cartridge had been found which could have caused the health problems, DPA reported. The substance was then presumably spread through the building by the air-conditioning system.”
Hundreds of passengers were evacuated to outside terminals 1 and 2, and had to wait for hours in subzero temperatures.
Inconvenience or attack? Initially media reported it as a “gas leak,” and now “pepper spray.” Regardless of the nature of the substance, it shut down a major airport for a minimum of an hour, canceling flights and sending 9 people to the hospital, dozens of others to have to be treated by paramedics.
